The NCV8501D33 is a linear regulator that is designed for automotive application, such as car radios, audio amplifiers and vehicle navigation systems. It features a maximum output current of 500mA and a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 25V. Its low dropout voltage and fast transient response make it an ideal choice for automotive power management applications.

The NCV8501D33 comes with an integrated circuit (IC) that features a 2A P-Channel MOSFET, a negative linear regulator, an error amplifier and a voltage reference. The P-Channel MOSFET serves as the main switch to regulate the output voltage. The negative linear regulator provides negative voltage regulation, while the error amplifier monitors the output voltage and prevents sudden changes in the output voltage during load transients.

The NCV8501D33 uses Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to determine the switching frequency and thus the power consumption of the regulator. The switching frequency is determined by the voltage loop and is automatically adjusted based on the load current. By using PFM instead of constant frequency operation, the power consumption is reduced significantly.

The NCV8501D33 also features a reverse battery protection circuit to protect the device from reverse polarity. The protection circuit will shut down the device in case of a reverse battery connection and thus protect the automotive battery from damage. It also integrates an under voltage lockout (UVLO) and under voltage warning (BLU) circuit to protect the device from excessive current draw. The UVLO will shutdown the device and the BLU will indicate that the input voltage has reached a critical level.

In addition, the NCV8501D33 includes other features such as over voltage protection (OVP) and an internal over temperature protection (OTP). The OVP detects the input voltage and shuts down the device if it exceeds the maximum specified value, while the OTP shuts down the device if the device temperature exceeds the specified limits. The device also features short circuit protection and current limit protection to prevent excessive current from flowing through the device.

The NCV8501D33 is designed for use in automotive applications and is especially suitable for car radios, audio amplifiers and vehicle navigation systems.
