NCV8505D2TADJ is a 6A low dropout (LDO) linear regulator from ON Semiconductor which has been designed to deliver a stable output voltage for a wide variety of low input voltage applications. It is ideal for providing power to microcontrollers, DSPs, low-power FPGAs, and other digital components. The Low Dropout (LDO) regulator operates from an input voltage range of 4.5 to 16V at a nominal output voltage of 5V. It can deliver 6A of continuous output current with a maximum dropout voltage of 0.3V at 5A.

The NCV8505D2TADJ is available in a 5-pin, 3mm x 3mm DFN-8 package and features low quiescent current (25uA at no load) and low output noise (30 mVrms). The device is adjustable with a resistor divider and a PWM Control pin. The PWM pin provides an external, synchronized duty cycle control to adjust the output voltage of the regulator. The LDO also integrates overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown protection, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Working Principle

The working principle behind the NCV8505D2TADJ is based on a linear voltage regulator. It operates by fitting a precision voltage reference (VRef) in series between the input and output of the LDO. This reference voltage is compared with a programmable feedback setpoint, which is set by a resistor divider on the output. The voltage error between the feedback voltage and the reference voltage is amplified and then used to control the gate of the power MOSFET at the output of the LDO. The size of the current that flows into the output of the LDO is determined by the difference between the output voltage and the reference in proportion to the current flowing into the output. The MOSFET then adjusts its gate voltage to raise or lower the output voltage until it reaches the desired setpoint.

In order to adjust the output voltage using the PWM Control pin, it is necessary to generate a PWM signal with a sync pulse and injecting it into the pin. The opening and closing of the gate of the power MOSFET is determined by the duty cycle of the PWM signal. When the duty cycle increases, the amount of current flowing into the output of the LDO increases and the output voltage increases accordingly. Conversely, when the duty cycle decreases, the amount of current flowing into the output of the LDO decreases and the output voltage decreases accordingly.

As mentioned earlier, the NCV8505D2TADJ features overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown protection. The overvoltage protection monitors the output voltage and automatically shuts down the LDO if the output voltage exceeds its maximum rated value. The short-circuit protection monitors the output voltage and automatically shuts down the LDO if the output voltage drops below its minimum rated value. Finally, the thermal shutdown protection monitors the temperature of the LDO and automatically shuts it down if it exceeds its maximum rated temperature.
