NE556DRE4 is a Dual Precision Timer integrated circuit (IC) from Texas Instruments (TI). As a member of the NE556 family, it offers two independent timing systems in a single package.?The NE556DRE4 is suitable for motor speed control, frequency divider, oscillator, pulse width/position modulation, temperature controller and timer, among many other applications where accurate timing is required. It offers a fixed-frequency operation and adjustable duty cycle.
NE556DRE4 has two identical, extremely stable timers that are internally connected in a dual in-line manner (DIP 8) but with independent control. It offers time delays of up to 250ms with accuracy of up to 5μs. The NE556DRE4 has 4 pins; Vcc - Supply Voltage, Output - Timer Output, ground - Electrical ground and Reset - Active Low. The NE556DRE4 can be digitally customized to perform complex functions such as time delays and pulse width modulation, making it a universal and reliable device.
The most distinctive feature of the NE556DRE4 is that it can be programmed through the Resistors (R1 and R2) and the Capacitors (C1 and C2) that are connected to the Vcc pin and ground pin. Depending on the values of the components used, the device can be configured for the desired delay, trigger level and frequency. When the R1 and R2 resistors are tied together, the device operates in its monostable mode or “one-shot” mode. In this mode, the NE556DRE4 goes in a high state when the trigger signal is applied, then to a low state when the time delay is achieved. If the resistors are not tied together, it operates in its astable mode, meaning the output signal is continuously alternating between high and low states.
When operated in the monostable mode, the time delay can be configured using the following formula:
Time Delay = 1.1 RC
where R is the combined resistance of R1 and R2 and C is the capacitance of C1 and C2.
The NE556DRE4 also features an active low reset pin which is employed to reset the device, if necessary. The reset pin is connected to a capacitor, the combination of the two generates a pulse that resets the timer and halts the output signal.
The NE556DRE4 is especially useful for many applications requiring pulse-width and long-duty-cycle modulation as well as motor speed control. It is also an ideal choice for oscillator design, as the internal circuitry can provide versatile frequencies and accurately timed control. Furthermore, the device offers adjustable duty cycle and frequency in astable mode and accuracy up to 5μs in monostable mode, making it highly reliable and versatile.
