Working Principle

The comparators compare an internally generated reference voltage to an input voltage at their respective comparator inputs, and a signal representing the comparison is output from the comparator. This signal is used by the analog switch to select one comparator output as the timer output signal. The other comparator is used for setting the pulse width or time delay. The change in voltage at the capacitor of the RC oscillator/square wave generator is used to reset the flip-flop and trigger the two comparators.
The NE556NG4 can operate the two timers in several ways, depending on the circuitry connected to the timer. Since both timers are triggered by the same input signal, they can be driven sequentially or simultaneously, enabling a variety of time-delay and/or pulse-width controlled functions.
