Working Principle

As a unidirectional current controlling semiconductor device, NRVB140SFT3G is the source of DC power which can be provided to important appliances in our daily life. It converts AC power supply to DC power without giving up transistors and other complicated circuitry. By using state-of-the-art planar technology, this diode itself can be used to achieve economic and reliable on/off control of the circuit as it is able to pass current in one direction blocking current in the opposite direction.

The diode has two terminals: anode and cathode which identify the direction current will flow when the diode is turned on. It is composed of a small piece of N-type semiconductor material and a larger P-type semiconductor material. When the voltage applied to the two terminals is greater than a forward threshold voltage, an electric field is created and majority carriers (electrons) will be drawn from the anode to the cathode and minority carriers (holes) in the opposite direction, creating an electric current from anode to cathode.

To achieve best performance, the reverse current blocking capability is largely dependent on the total circuit resistance of the diode. The diode\'s reverse voltage blocking capability is determined by its PN junction quality and the depletion region width. This explains why a faster response time is obtained when the reverse voltage blocking is higher.
