Working Principle

The P1803AC employs a bidirectional architecture, consisting of an anode, a control electrode and a cathode. When a positive voltage is applied between the anode and the control electrode, a small current flows from the anode to the control electrode. This current is not enough to turn on the device, but it starts a process where the anode-control voltage starts to increase. When it reaches a certain level, the device is “triggered”. This means it turns on, allowing a large current to flow from the anode to the cathode. Once triggered, the P1803AC remains in the “on” state until the voltage between the anode and control electrode decreases below a certain level, at which point the device is “turned off” and the current flow stops.

The P1803AC can also be configured to activate if the voltage between the anode and the control electrode drops below a certain level. The point at which this occurs is referred to as the “reverse-trigger” point. This feature allows the device to be used as a protection device, activating only when a certain level of overvoltage or surge is present, thus preventing any damage to connected equipment.
