They are also known as rectifiers, having a high current and voltage carrying capability and a wide range of application fields. Toshiba’s P2103AALRP three phase bridge rectifier is specially designed for variable frequency drives and other types of rectification circuits, being able to support high-power applications. Let’s explore its application field and its working principle. Application FieldThe TSUP2103AALRP is designed to be used in variable frequency drives requiring high-speed switching of currents, thus being able to handle electric motor applications up to 320A. It can also be used in solar and wind energy systems, having a low reverse leakage current and a low forward voltage so as to maintain efficiency in a broad temperature range. Additionally, it can also be used in rectifying circuits for electric energy storage devices, as well as in LED lighting applications, offering small dimensions and high reliability. Working PrincipleWhen understanding the working principle of the TSUP2103AALRP, one must first understand the basics of thyristors. Thyristors are semiconductor devices which can be used to control current in electric circuits composed of resistive, inductive or capacitive components. By applying a certain voltage to its control terminals, current can be blocked, limited or turned on or off. This is known as gating. The TSUP2103AALRP module is a three-phase bridge rectifier, meaning that it has three thyristors connected in a series-parallel configuration. In each phase, the anode of the thyristors is connected with the input terminal, while their cathode is connected with the output terminal. Then, all the other cathodes are connected in parallel between the G1 and G2 terminals. By applying a voltage to these terminals, two of the thyristors can be gated on, allowing current from the input to flow to the output. In order to ensure a safe operation, the TSUP2103AALRP also includes a built-in temperature sensor. This sensor measures the temperature of the device, and in case it rises above a certain threshold, an inhibit signal is sent to the thyristor gates, switching them off and protecting the device from overload.
