Thyristors are also known as silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs). They are semiconductor devices with three layers of alternating N-type and P-type materials. These devices are characterized by their ability to pass large amounts of current in one direction, while blocking all current and voltage in the opposite direction.

P2103AA is an application field specific thyristor that is mainly used for motor control applications such as starting, stopping and reversing of a motor. It is also used for rectification, phase control and power switch applications. It is a three-phase SCR with low maximum ON impedance, high current output, and low conduction loss.

Working Principle of P2103AA

The working principle of P2103AA can be defined based on its three-phase construction. It consists of three p/n junctions connected in series with each other and connected in parallel with the load. This SCR can be triggered in two ways –A/C or D/C. When a triggering signal is applied to gate of the SCR, it conducts current in the forward direction.

The P2103AA can be triggered by three possible sources. The first source is AC power from the mains supply. This source of triggering results in motor control applications like switch and rectification. The second source is DC voltage, and the third is an external signal generated by an SCR driver or a microcontroller. When AC power is used as the source of triggering, the voltage of the SCR should be greater than the peak voltage of the mains supply. When DC voltage is the source of triggering, the peak voltage should be greater than the forward voltage of the SCR.

It is also useful for controlling electric motor speed, reversing motor direction, and switching voltage and current levels.
