Working Principle
The PCM1608Y is a single-slope, delta-sigma type analog-to-digital converter. The PCM1608Y has an integrated low-pass filter and decimator, and also has a high common-mode rejection ratio (65 dB) and low power consumption with a power-down mode. The basic operation of a delta-sigma ADC is to sample an analog input signal, convert it to digital signals, and then output the digital data in the form of a serial stream. The PCM1608Y samples the input with a sinusoidal clock signal, and then converts the signal into digital via a single-slope successive approximation technique. The data output format can be configured as either left/right justified, or 24-bit offset coding. The digital output data transfer format is determined by the value written to the control register. The digital data can be output in either two\'s compliment or offset-binary format. The user can also select the data rate, output data rate and data format according to the application. The PCM1608Y includes an integrated low-pass filter to reduce the frequency components of the input signal that are above the Nyquist frequency. It also has a decimator to reduce the sampling rate in order to accommodate lower data rate applications. Finally, the data output stream is filtered to remove any out of band signals. The PCM1608Y also provides additional features such as external clock synchronization, selectable word size and power down mode. The external clock synchronization has been designed with the intention of enabling the connection of multiple converters to one master clock. This ensures that all the data is synchronized and reduces any system jitter caused by asynchronous sampling. Overall, the PCM1608Y is an excellent A/D converter with many features that make it ideal for professional audio applications.
