PGA205 is a versatile CMOS gain block amplifier that provides multiple direct signal path gains with a low-power envelope to those designing portable or low-voltage signal chain components. Ideal for a wide range of applications requiring the signal-conditioning advantage of a variable-gain amplifier, PGA205 provides a combination of dynamic characteristic, signal integrity, and power savings.
The wide dynamic range and controlled gain steps of the PGA205 make it a preferred choice for instrumentation applications where selecting and amplifying DC and low-frequency AC signals of various magnitudes are required. Specifically designed to be a GainBlocks Amplifier, the PGA205 integrates dual amplifiers with gain and selectable gain range steps, adjustable outputs and integrated level-pulling and current limiter circuits.

Working Principle
PGA205 implements a precision amplifier and an adjustable gain-block amplifier with independent gain setting and output level-pulling function. The device is powered by a single supply with a range of 2.4V to 5.5V and consumes only 450μA of current. The PGA205 offer gain selections that range from 0.2V/V to 5V/V, designed to amplify signals with a wide dynamic range.
The gain of the Amplifier-GainSection is determined by the setting of the digital potentiometer DGND pins. The digital potentiometer’s gain can be adjusted by a resistive divider or a digitally encoded resistor (DER) connected to the DGND pins. The output of the gain block’s amplifier is connected to the level-pulling ( Level-PullingSection) circuit and regulated via a trans-conductance (gM) device.
The trans-conductance device is connected between the amplifier’s output and the negative input of the amplifier-gain block. When the input signal of the amplifier-gain section is greater than the set voltage, the current in the device flows. This current flows into the output of the amplifier-gain section, which reduces the output voltage of the amplifier-gain section. This is known as “level-pulling” and is used to keep the maximum output from the amplifier section within the safe upper limit.
The level-pulling circuit also serves to extend the gain range of the amplifier-gain section. The ability to adjust the output limit of the amplifier-gain section allows the gain block to be used in applications that require high gain settings to produce large output signals. In addition to level-pulling, the integrated current limiter circuitry ensures that the amplifier-gain section won’t consume more than the designed power.
