The two metal plates are usually connected by a dielectric material, which can be paper, polyester, polypropylene, ceramic and other materials. When an electrical potential is applied across the two plates, a charge is stored across the interface between them. This charge is proportional to the capacitance of the capacitor, and therefore, it stores electrical energy.When an alternating current passes through the capacitor, it has the ability to pass the AC current while blocking the DC current. This is because the voltage across the capacitor changes over time and therefore, the charge stored within the capacitor also changes. This causes the capacitor to act as a filter and block the DC current.The voltage of the capacitor can be adjusted by changing its capacitance. This is done by either increasing or decreasing the area of the plates or by adjusting the type of dielectric material used between the two plates.
