Introduction to TRIACs

Thyristors or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) are four-layer, three-terminal semiconductor devices. They are widely used to control the power in different applications, such as electric motors, heating elements and AC systems. TRIACs, also known as thyristor AC switches, are a variant of SCRs that can switch AC currents. They are three-terminal semiconductor devices used to control the power in AC circuits. Despite being versatile, they are mainly used as lighting dimmers, motor speed controllers, and heating elements.

Q8008LH4 Application Field and Working Principle

The Q8008LH4 is a 4A, 800V blocking TRIAC. It is a sensitive gate thyristor suitable for consumer, industrial, audio and lighting control applications. This TRIAC is designed to switch AC power with a low gate current in a wide range of applications. The a-Si controlled spark gap able to withstand up to 8kV transients and a direct high voltage link result in low thermal resistance and minimal effects by stray magnetic fields.

Due to its sensitive gate and high blocking voltage properties, the Q8008LH4 is suitable for a broad range of applications, such as LED and LED control, dimmers, motor speed controllers, solid-state relays, and evaporative and pool controllers. It is also suitable for high power and residential lighting applications, industrial lighting and electric water heating applications.

The TRIAC is a three-terminal, two-switch device, with two active terminals (T1 and T2) and a gate. In order to trigger conduction, the gate of the Q8008LH4 needs to be connected to a positive voltage (Vgt) relative to the negative terminal (T1). The positive terminal (T2) triggers the conduction by connecting it to any AC voltage.

The Q8008LH4 has an on-state voltage drop of nominal 25V and an on-state current of 4Amps. The conduction angle depends on the gate voltage applied, but typically it ranges from 80° to 160°. In its highest dissipation region, the device can reach up to 80°C at 40°C for an ambient temperature.

The Q8008LH4 also has a built-in thermal protection feature, which is activated when its junction temperature reaches a preset temperature (typically 140°C). The protection feature keeps the device in an auto-restart mode, thus preventing any damage to the device or the system.
