Thyristors - TRIACs
A TRIAC is an acronym for TRIode for AC. It is a three-terminal device that can be used in a broad range of applications, from basic switching circuits to more complex power control and conversion systems. The Q8016LH352 is a type of TRIAC and is used in power control and switch mode power supplies, due to its fast switching speed, low stand-by power consumption and extended temperature range.When an external voltage (gate voltage) is applied to the gate terminal of the TRIAC, it allows for the conduction of current over either of its two main terminals (anode and cathode). This is known as the “on” state. When the external voltage applied to the gate is removed, the TRIAC turns “off” and current no longer flows through the device. This process is known as the thyristor latch-up or “off” state. It is very common in AC power circuits and its capability to switch current back and forth is referred to as “alternating current control”. The Q8016LH352 is designed specifically for controlling alternating current. It has a breakdown voltage rating of 800V, a maximum gate trigger current of 2.5mA, maximum on-state current of 16A at 100°C and can switch on in just 4µS. It is temperature stable, meaning that it has no operating temperature drift. It is ideal for controlling the alternating current in applications from 5VAC to 200VAC.The Q8016LH352 is used in applications such as light dimmers, motor speed controls, lamp ballast, motor controls, heater controls, heating and cooling systems, voltage regulators and AC solenoids and relays. The thyristor operates at a much higher frequency in comparison to mechanical switches and is capable of switching current with very little phase shift. It also works well for regulating power supply to AC loads and for controlling the speed of AC motors.In addition to its fast switching speed, the Q8016LH352 also offers a wide range of protection features such as creepage and clearance separations, over-voltage protection, over-current protection and short-circuit protection. It is also designed to prevent the possibility of generating sparks and ringing noises.The working principle of the Q8016LH352 is that when an external voltage is applied to its main terminals, the TRIAC will conduct current in either direction across its main terminals. This is known as the thyristor\'s “on” state. When the external voltage is removed, the TRIAC turns off, and no current will flow through the device. This is known as the “off” state.In conclusion, the Q8016LH352 is a type of TRIAC which is designed to control alternating current.
