Q8016RH6TP Working Principle

When a positive gate pulse is applied to the thyristor, a small current passes through and generates channel between PN layer, making it conduct current towards the anode and cathode.The anode is connected to the +side and the internal PN junction is connected to the - side. When the anode current rises above the threshold level, the TRIAC turns on. This causes the anode side to draw current and the cathode side to be conducting at the same time. When the current is high enough and has exceeded the holding current of the TRIAC it will remain ON and continue conducting current until the current reduces below the holding current. When this happens, the TRIAC turns off and it is referred to as a latching OFF condition.When a reverse gate is applied, the thyristor will also be turned off, this is sometimes referred to as the forced OFF condition. The effect of the two conditions is to reduce the switching and operating losses of the device.
