Thyristors - TRIACs
A TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current) is a three-terminal, bidirectional switch or semiconductor device made with a combination of two thyristors connected in inverse parallel. It controls the amount of voltage and current passing through it in both the directions by means of an external gate voltage applied to its gate terminal. A Q8016NH3TP is a thyristor device used for switching and controlling current in both directions as per the requirement.
The Q8016NH3TP semiconductor device is a three-terminal bidirectional switch made up of four layers consisting of a PNPN structure such as a P type layer, a negative type layer, a positive type layer and a P type layer, connected in inverse parallel and forming a slightly different construction compared to the TRIAC. Those four layers, along with its gate terminal provides the Q8016NH3TP with the direction ability and temperature stability along with a high blocking voltage and the capacity to pass through a high amount of current.
The Q8016NH3TP application field is used for motor speed controllers, lamp dimmers, fan regulator, AC power switches, AC/DC converters and other related applications. In motor speed controllers, the full-wave rectified voltage is applied to its two main terminals, and with the help of a gate voltage, from the third terminal, it is used to control the speed of the motor by changing its speed. In lamp dimmers, a light-dependent resistor and potentiometer, along with the Q8016NH3TP, is used to control the amount of current supplied to the lamp and thus, controlling its intensity. A fan regulator is used to control the speed of the fan by decreasing the voltage being supplied to it and the Q8016NH3TP is used to supply it with a certain amount of voltage.
The Q8016NH3TP working principle is that it conducts the current when its gate terminal is given a positive voltage and becomes activated, and stops current flowing through it when the voltage is removed and it goes in a deactivated state. It controls and has the capability of passing the current in both the directions and the switching action is done by the gate terminal which enables it to control the amount of current being passed through itself. This switching action can also be triggered with the help of a external control device like a relay.
The Q8016NH3TP semiconductor device offers reliability, compact size, long-term stability, high voltage and current capability along with temperature stability. It provides high efficiency, low power consumption and switches slowly due to the nature of the construction of the two thyristors in their inverse parallel connection.
