Common mode chokes are used in electrical operations to reduce electrical noise and mitigate electromagnetic interference. Generally, common mode chokes are constructed using a combination of coiled wires and ferrite beads.
The RN242-1-02 is one of the most commonly used common mode choke designs. These components feature two winding cores: a primary and a secondary winding core. A primary winding is made up of two type "2F1" ferrite beads which are connected to an outer winding core. This type of core is typically composed of nickel-plated copper, which has the best electrical properties of all metals.
