A single junction RHG diode is a semiconductor device composed of a single junction and an RH (reverse handle) anode. A single junction RHG diode is commonly referred to as a single layer rectifier. It is used in a wide variety of applications, and its working principles are explained below.

The single junction RHG diode is composed of two p-n junctions which are connected in series. The p-n junctions are arranged so that the outwards flow of current is directed towards the junction in which electrons and holes converge, while the opposite junction reinvests in the opposite direction. This arrangement is referred to as “forward biasing”. The electron-hole pairs generated by the forward-biased junction are referred to as “majority carriers”.

When a reverse-biased voltage is applied to the single junction RHG diode, the repulsive electric fields of the reverse-biased junction prevent the majority carriers from passing from the anode to the cathode. This ends up forming what is referred to as a “reverse-bias potential”. This phenomenon yields a significant forward-biased electric field at the anode which allows the holes to pass through the junction and travel towards the cathode. This is referred to as “reverse current”.

Due to the nature of the electric field between the anode and cathode, the single junction RHG diode can also be used to “rectify” an AC voltage, i.e. to convert it into a DC voltage. The rectifying effect of the single junction RHG diode is achieved through the movement of majority carriers, which are selectively swept towards the anode or the cathode depending on the direction of the voltage applied across the diode. Thus, when a positive-going AC voltage is applied across the diode, the majority of the carriers are swept towards the anode and a negative-going voltage is applied across the diode, causing the majority of the carriers to be swept towards the cathode. The resulting DC voltage is thus substantially lower than the AC voltage.

Single junction RHG diodes are used in a variety of applications, including inverters, power supplies, and converters. In DC power supplies, diode rectifiers are used to convert the AC voltage from the wall outlet into a DC voltage. Diode rectifiers are also often used in DC inverters and converters to convert a DC current into an AC current. In these applications, diode rectifiers prevent the DC output current from flowing back through the system.

Single junction RHG diodes are also used in solar cells and photovoltaic systems. In these systems, photovoltaic cells are used to convert the energy of sunlight into electricity. A diode rectifier can be used in such a system to prevent the PV cells from receiving reverse voltage or current, which would prevent them from producing electricity.

Single junction RHG diodes are also used in automotive applications, such as alternators, starters, and engine control units. Alternators produce AC current, and the diode rectifier is used to convert this AC current into a DC output. In starters and engine control units, diode rectifiers are used to control the current flow from the battery. The diode rectifier ensures that the current flows in a direction that is beneficial to the system.

Single junction RHG diodes are invaluable components in applications ranging from power supplies to photovoltaic cells. Their ability to selectively flow electrons towards the anode or the cathode, depending on the direction of the electric field applied across them, allows them to both rectify AC voltages and protect sensitive electrical components from receiving reverse voltage.
