Thyristors - SCRs possess quite an array of practical applications. One of the most common is the S6012DRP. The S6012DRP has been found, due to its two-pin and four-pin package designs, to be especially attractive to efficient use in computer power supplies, and other hot-swap applications. Moreover, its design, which allows for its safe operation on temperatures approaching 175 °C, make it applicable to a range of applications.
The S6012DRP is a silicon-control rectifier which uses a semiconductor switch to control a larger current. It possesses anode, gate, and cathode lead options, with either dual or quad unidirectional packages of its configuration. It is ideal for controlling high-current and high-voltage applications, and effectively eliminates the need for multiple components otherwise used for power switching or motor control. The main principle behind the operation of the S6012DRP is that of a voltage-controlled switch.
When a direct current (DC) is applied to the anode and the gate terminals of the S6012DRP, the control current proceeds to pass through the gate. This serves to create a current flow which causes the switch to close, thus allowing the bigger current to begin to pass through the anode to the cathode terminal. Since the current is no longer routed through the gate, the gate current is reduced to an extremely low level, and the power dissipation is reduced to the point where the device can be self-heating protected.
As the current goes through a single-phase cycle, the current flow through the gate will repeatedly open and close. During each cycle, the gate current is increased and decreased in a controlled manner, so that the S6012DRP can operate as a fully on and off device. To facilitate this, the device contains internal protection circuits which will switch off the gate current and stop the device from being damaged.
In addition to providing the above functionality, the S6012DRP offers a number of advantages over other similar devices. It is one of the few gate triggered SCRs available which has an ultra-low-voltage operating capability. This allows for effective control of the load in smaller, low voltage, off-line circuits. Furthermore, its high current capability gives it a distinct advantage over other SCRs in applications which require heavy switching or motor control, such as in disk drives and industrial motors.
Therefore, the S6012DRP has wide applications in the electronic and electrical industry, making it suitable for a number of practical applications. It is due to its design and operation that it has become so popular, and is often chosen as the ideal SCR for a range of applications.
