S6012V application field and working principle
The S6012V is a semiconductor device that belongs to a wide range of devices known as Thyristors, or SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers). Thyristors are predominately used in the computer world, where their unique properties can be used to control a wide variety of functions. In simple terms, an SCR is a switch which is controlled by a low-level electric current. Once the device has been triggered, it will remain in its active state until the current through the device is completely interrupted.The S6012V is a very common example of a Thyristor. It is a two-terminal device with a 3-pin package. The device can handle up to 600V of reverse voltage and it has an Ohmic value of 0.12 Ohms. In terms of current, the S6012V can support up to 12 Amps. The SCR has an operating temperature range of 0°C to 120°C and its storage temperature range is - 40°C to + 85°C.The S6012V is primarily used in a range of applications, such as AC motor control, switching circuits, electronic power supplies and low power factor applications. It can also be used in the protection against overvoltage or overcurrent faults, thanks to its fast switching response, low power dissipation and low turn-on voltage.The working principle of an SCR is quite simple. It is based on a simple diode voltage/current relationship. The voltage applied across the device in the forward direction will cause a current to flow through the device. The current flowing through the device is proportional to the applied voltage until the device reaches the forward breakdown voltage and the current increases exponentially. Once the forward breakdown voltage of the SCR has been reached, it will remain in the conductive state until the current through the device has diminished to a certain point.When the SCR is in its on state, the positive cycle of the input AC signal is allowed to pass through the device. This is achieved by pulsing the gate terminal of the SCR with a positive or negative polarity. The direction of the pulse controls the states of the device.In conclusion, the S6012V is just one example of a very versatile and hugely popular device used in many different circuit applications. Its unique properties make it well suited for use in AC motor control, switching circuits, power supplies, protections against overvoltage and overcurrent faults and many other applications.
