TVS diodes are an integral part of the protection circuit of many electronic devices. SA160CAHA0G is one of these diodes which acts as a li-ion battery protection that is designed to protect Li-ion battery cells from overcharge, over-discharge, over voltage, short circuit conditions. This diode offers a high data rate of up to 1.5A with low on-resistance of 1mΩ. It is highly reliable with an excellent ESD protection up to 90V even in a harsh environment.
Application field
The SA160CAHA0G is used in a variety of applications such as notebook PCs, medical equipment, smart phones, and other Li-ion battery powered devices. In addition, it is suitable for use with small battery cells such as coin, prismatic, and 18650 types. Its excellent protection against ESD and over voltage makes it suitable for automotive applications. It is also used in solar powered applications, where the diode is used to protect solar cells.
Working Principle
The working principle of the SA160CAHA0G is relatively simple. The diode has two metal oxide varistors (MOV) within the package, which provide the ESD protection. The ESD protection is enhanced by the design of the MOVs, which includes a metal-insulator layer which acts as a series connection between them. The varistors are designed to clamp any transient high voltage as soon as it appears on the load, limiting the amount of current passed through the device.
The diode also has a thermal switch within it, which serves as the over voltage protection mechanism. The thermal switch is set to trip when the voltage reaches a certain level, and then disconnects the device from the power source, preventing overcharging or damaging the Li-ion cells by cutting off the power.
The Li-ion battery cells are protected by the diode from overcharge, over-discharge, over voltage, and short circuit conditions. After the current begins to flow, the metal oxide varistors within the device absorb the transient high voltage and limit the current through the device, while the thermal switch trips if the voltage reaches a certain level, which prevents overcharging or damaging the battery cells.
