The working principle of the SA160CA is that it operates as an avalanche diode. When an overvoltage or surge occurs, a small reverse voltage is applied to the diode. This reverse voltage causes the diode to avalanche, allowing current to flow from the anode to the cathode. The current is limited to a predetermined level which is determined by the surge voltage, the physical characteristics of the diode, and the protection level of the system.
