TVS - diodes are components used to protect circuits from electrical overstress conditions. The intensity of the current surge or transient may be high enough to cause destruction of the device or of other connected components. The SA16CA A0G TVS diode is a bi-directional transient voltage suppression device that provides both ESD and over-voltage protection. It has a high peak pulse current capability and a low breakdown voltage which makes it ideal for protecting microprocessors, logic ICs, and data transmission ports from ESD and over voltage transients.
The SA16CA A0G is designed to provide peak current handling of 250mA, clamping voltage of 16V, and has a low clamping capacitance of only 4.5pF. The device can be used to protect a wide range of applications from 10V to 16V and it operates up to a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
The key operating principles of a SA16CA A0G TVS diode are based on two important microscopic physical effects: avalanche breakdown and Zener breakdown. In avalanche breakdown, the free charge carriers in the n-side of the diode are accelerated due to an increasing electric field and gain sufficient kinetic energy to create additional charge carriers by impact ionization. This rapidly increases the current flow through the diode. In Zener breakdown, the built-in electric field in reverse biased p-n junction overcomes destruction barrier, which leads to the electrons jumping from valance to conduction band, producing an abrupt voltage decrease.
The device is in its most basic form, a gate-protected diode and is used to stop overcurrent transient events from damaging your circuits components. When the TVS diode is passed a step voltage, its avalanche and Zener breakdowns occur respectively, clamping voltage below the avalanche breakdown point, and the remaining voltage drops through the diode\'s internal resistance. This diode is primarily responsible for limiting the maximum voltage seen by the connected device.
In practice, SA16CA A0G is used in a variety of situations across a range of applications where peak current protection is needed. This device is often used in applications such as automotive electronics, power supplies, motor controllers, and computer peripheral devices. It is also often used for ESD protection, such as for I/O ports, data lines, and bus controllers.
SA16CA A0G TVS diodes make an excellent solution for transient voltage protection as they offer a low on-state leakage current, fast response times, and low capacitance. This makes them perfect for protecting sensitive electronic components from electrical overstress conditions.
