TVS (transient voltage suppression) diodes are used to suppress damaging voltage transients. The SA22A-E3/73 is a single-component, unidirectional, 2-line ESD suppressor diode, designed to protect against electrical charge and discharge events that may otherwise damage or destroy electronics. It is a glass-encapsulated diode with solid electrodes, a hermetically sealed package, and a single-metal coating.
This TVS diode is designed to protect against transient voltage events caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) from a variety of sources. It suppresses electrical charge or discharge events to below the trigger threshold used in most circuits, protecting the circuit against damages which would otherwise occur. The built-in protection feature of this diode keeps the system from experiencing problems due to surges, spikes, and ESD events.
The SA22A-E3/73 offers an operating voltage between 60-380Volts and peak pulse power from 350 Watts to 10KWatts. It has a non-linear resistance that increases nonlinearly as the voltage increases, providing a low-impedance conduction path for large transient voltage events while allowing normal signals and power flows to pass through unaffected. The resistance of the diode is also stable and repeatable over a wide temperature range.
This diode has a variety of applications, including the protection of communications and data lines, consumer electronics, automotive, military, industrial, medical, and other sensitive electronic circuits. It is particularly effective at protecting circuits from electrical charge or discharge related to static electricity, lightning, or power surges. It is also useful in preventing high-voltage drops or surges from passing into sensitive systems.
The working principle of a TVS diode is relatively simple. When exposed to voltage levels above its operational threshold, the diode\'s non-linear resistance increases exponentially. This drastic increase in resistance limits the amount of current that can flow into the circuit, preventing it from becoming damaged by the excessive voltage.
