TVS diodes, also known as TransZorbs or supressors, are protection devices designed for suppressing transients caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other events which may cause sudden and extreme spikes in electrical currents. A SA22CA R0G, or ESD Protection Diode Array, is commonly used for ESD protection as it can handle high peak pulse currents and provide a large standoff voltage. This type of diode is specially adapted to the needs of a variety of electronic applications.
The SA22CA R0G comprises of two diodes, each with separate anode and cathode leads. The anode of one diode is connected to the cathode lead of the other diode - usually via metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor, which is built into the diode package. This configuration is known as a ‘guard’ diode. This protects against transient voltage pulses more effectively than a single diode, as the two diodes have larger capacitive insulation between them.
The ESD protection diode array operates by diverting current away from components and circuits which are vulnerable to ESD and other voltage transients. It can also be used in automotive applications, such as airbag system TVS diodes, to protect against ESD.
