TVS - Diodes are designed to protect sensitive electronic components and systems from transient over-voltage. The SA22CA-E3/54 is an advanced high peak pulse power bidirectional ESD protection diode which provides robust protection against the effects of electrostatic discharge (ESD).
This device provides a peak pulse power of 22 Amps, very low leakage current and excellent clamping performance. It has a low maximum clamping voltage of 54 Volts at 8 Amps for standard ESD levels. The breakdown voltage is rated at 59 Volts peak reverse voltage, and the device is capable of realizing ESD protection up to IEC 61000-4-2 Air-15KV.
The SA22CA-E3/54 application field is for applications that require a low maximum clamping voltage, low leakage current, wide temperature range and high reverse standoff voltage protection from ESD events. It can provide protection from transient over-voltage generated by ESD discharges, lightning strikes, and induced transients. It is suitable for low capacitively-loaded electronic products such as batteries, wearables, medical devices, consumer electronics, power supplies, and telecommunications equipment.
The working principle of SA22CA-E3/54 begins when an over-voltage transient event (such as an ESD surge or lightning strike) is applied to the device. The diode starts to conduct, diverting the surge through the ESD protection diode and protecting the vulnerable device from the over-voltage transients. This is accomplished by the clamped voltage generated by the combination of the device\'s peak power handling capability and the resistance distance between the diode and the vulnerable Device Under Test (DUT). The device peak power curve plays an important role here since it limits the maximum voltage at which the device can clamped without permanently damage the device.
By having a lower clamping voltage than the rated breakdown voltage, the SA22CA-E3/54 can reduce the amount of power and consequential heat generated during the clamping process. This contributes to the overall robustness of the protection circuit and reduce the risk of over-clamping the vulnerable Device Under Test (DUT).
The device also provides excellent withstanding performance against the IEC 61000-4-2 Air-15KV test standard, making it suitable for all level of protection needs. It is also designed to withstand repetitive ESD strikes over its working temperature range.
