SA33AG is a semiconductor device that belongs to transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes. It is widely used in various electronic protection applications such as over and under voltage protection, signal and data line protection, and over-current protection. Its unique fluorescent substance, which is used as the semiconductor base material, provides excellent electrical insulation properties. Moreover, its unique design greatly reduces the amount of electric current it passes while under normal operation.

The SA33AG is a multilayer diode and its construction is such that it is made up of two identical but distinct layers. The first layer is composed of an aluminum top and a zinc-doped oxide bottom while the other contains a semiconductor material, usually gallium arsenide. The aluminum top layer and zinc oxide bottom layer have a high electrical resistivity so that it is not easy for the electric current to pass through them. Meanwhile, the gallium arsenide layer is highly conductive and can conduct electric current. As a result, the electric current will be divided between the two layers when in an environment with a normal voltage.

In terms of the working principle of the SA33AG, when a high voltage is detected by the two layers, the zinc oxide layer reduces the voltage to a normal level by acting as an insulator. On the other hand, when the voltage is too low, the gallium arsenide layer immediately switches off the device to protect the circuit and the device itself. As a result, the SA33AG can provide strong over and under-voltage protection when used in an electronic application.

The SA33AG is also capable of providing good protection when exposed to fast transients, due to its excellent surge protection characteristics. It can suppress voltage spikes caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), radiated interference, induction spikes, and brute force spikes, giving it excellent applications in the communications field.
