Working principle of SA33CA

The SA33CA is a monolithic device consisting of a Zener diode and a fast response MOSFET. When a transient voltage (EOS or EFT) occurs, the diode will begin to conduct and absorb the voltage spike. The MOSFET then turns on after a trigger voltage is reached and limits the reverse voltage. The two components act together to discharge the ESD and prevent it from reaching the sensitive components of the circuit and resulting in damage.

During a surge or ESD, the MOSFET acts as a crowbar by clamping the pin voltage to Ground. The crowbar circuit is limited by the on-resistance of the MOSFET, which is roughly 1 Ω during normal operation. The diode therefore plays an important role in limiting the current through the MOSFET, even when the voltage reaches up to 12V. The SA33CA is thus highly effective at limiting surge current while maintaining low voltage clamping in all environments.
