A Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode, or simply a TVS diode, is an electronics protection device specifically designed to protect sensitive electronics from high voltage levels. The most common types of TVS diodes are typically metal oxide varistors (MOVs), which are used in numerous applications for protecting against transients and surges that exceed normal operating limits. The SA40 is a high performance, surface mount TVS diode that offers excellent clamping and noise protection.
The SA40 TVS diode is ideal for use in a variety of applications including telecommunications equipment, automotive electronics, computers and peripherals, industrial electronic equipment, and consumer audio/video applications. It is designed to provide reliable transient voltage protection up to 6.5 kV (peak pulse power), and a maximum peak pulse current of 20A. It also offers superior ESD protection, with a clamping voltage of 10V. The SA40 is constructed from an advanced diffusion process, and features an ultra low capacitance design, with an ultra low leakage current of less than 10 nA.
The SA40 TVS diode provides protection against overvoltage transients that can be caused by lightning, short circuits, inductive loads, and electrical noise. Its low on-state voltage ensures that the circuit is protected against overvoltage events, while also providing a low forward voltage drop for improved circuit performance. The SA40 also features integrated ESD protection, which protects sensitive components from electrostatic discharges.
The SA40 TVS diode\'s working principle of operation begins when an external high voltage transient is applied to the diode. When the voltage exceeds the diode\'s breakdown voltage, current will flow from the external source, through the diode and into the protected device. The current is then diverted away from the sensitive components and dissipates across the protecting diode. When the voltage returns to normal levels, the diode returns to its low leakage state.
