TVS Diodes are widely used components in electronic circuits and they form part of the protections against transient overvoltage surges that are usually associated with lightning strikes. The SA40C-E3/54 is a unidirectional-type TVS diode specifically designed for transient overvoltage suppression applications. The SA40C-E3/54 is mainly used in differential-mode suppression applications such as AC Line Cord, Power Line, Charger, Automotive, Ethernet Line, and Telecom Line applications. It offers a maximum operating voltage of 40V and a maximum operating temperature of +175°C. The SA40C-E3/54 has a very fast response time of 2ns, making it ideal for lightning and ESD protection circuits. Furthermore, it also has an excellent clamping capability which makes it an excellent choice for protection against noise generated by switching power supplies, motor controllers, and other electrical devices.Kinked Leakage Current
In order to maximize the leakage current protection, the SA40C-E3/54 has been designed with a kinked leakage current. This is an important feature as it reduces the total flow of current through the device and eliminates the risk of leakage current.Working Principle
The working principle of the SA40C-E3/54 is quite simple. When the voltage across the device exceeds its rated limit, a clamping action occurs that redirects the excess voltage away from the device, thus protecting the circuit from the overvoltage condition. The device is constructed using a reverse avalanche diode and a pair of series connected ultra-fast silicon diodes. When the voltage across the device exceeds its rated limit, the reverse avalanche diode begins to eat away at the excess voltage, and the pair of series connected ultra-fast silicon diodes take over and protect the circuit from further damage.Conclusion
