TVS – Diodes are designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage and current spikes. The SA5.0CAHE3/54 is a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode that offers protection against transients with fast response time, low clamping voltage and low forward voltage drop. The SA5.0CAHE3/54 is a unidirectional protection device to be used in applications that require fast low-clamping voltage, low-forward voltage and fast response time. It can handle up to 5.0A peak surge currents and its maximum power dissipation is 4.5W. The device is suitable for protection in automotive applications, computer peripherals, communication systems, industrial equipments, handhelds and portable equipments.
The device consists of two parts: an encapsulated power semiconductor junction connected between two separate inputs and a reverse biased internal Zener diode. The power semiconductor junction has anode and cathode terminals. The anode terminal is connected to the positive input, while the cathode terminal is connected to the negative input. The internal Zener diode is reverse biased and is used to suppress transient voltages that may exceed the maximum power dissipation rating of the power semiconductor junction.
The SA5.0CAHE3/54 has a fast response time (< 1 ns) which allows it to protect sensitive components from transient voltage spikes. When an over-voltage occurs, the power semiconductor junction will immediately turn on and rapidly draw current from the input source. This, together with the Zener diode, will quickly reduce the voltage to a safe level. The device also has a very low clamping voltage, which is the maximum voltage that will be clamped on the load when an over-voltage occurs.
The SA5.0CAHE3/54 also has a low forward voltage drop, which is the voltage that is lost when the diode is conducting. This low forward voltage drop reduces the amount of energy that is lost, increasing the efficiency of the device. As the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the device, the power semiconductor junction turns off, limiting the current that can flow through the device.
