TVS - Diodes

Surge Arrester (Transient Voltage Suppressor) series diodes are used in applications to protect a chip from voltage surge. One type of surge arrester diode is the SA51A R0G. This diode\'s application fields and working principles are explained in this article.

Application Fields

The SA51A R0G diode has mainly been developed for low voltage transient response applications. Its features 10V nominal working power voltage and 40V maximum peak pulse power voltage. It has a maximum peak pulse power current of 1.6A and a maximum clamping voltage of 24V. The diode has a surge capacity of 3.2MA, a capacitance of 350pF and an equivalent series resistance of 5 ohms.

These features make the SA51A R0G ideal for use in low power voltage devices such as microcontrollers, control systems, embedded systems, RF transceivers, audio amplifiers, television receivers and DVD players. It can be used to protect circuitry and components against voltage surges in any of these applications.

Working Principle

The working principle of the SA51A R0G diode is based on the basic principle of a diodes - the “diode bias”. The diode is normally biased either reversely or positively. Generally, when the diode is in the reverse bias state, electrons are not conducted and the diode is non-conducting. However, the characteristics of the SA51A R0G diode enable it to not only be non-conducting but to also protect against voltage or current transients.

The SA51A R0G diode has a capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristic that adapts to the changing waveform of the applied electrical over-voltage. As the Transient Voltage increases, the capacitance increases, thereby storing energy under the Reverse Bias. Eventually, when the voltage drops, the capacitance decreases, releasing the stored energy in the form of a current.

Due to this process, the SA51A R0G diode is able to provide effective protection against transient voltage and peak pulse currents. The diode can absorb the energy and redirect it to ground, thereby reducing the transient voltage and preventing it from causing damage to the components and circuits.
