A Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode, also known as a Transient Voltage protection diode, is typically used in an electronic system or equipment to help protect the device from transient overvoltage events and other power surges. The SA51CA is a TVS diode that is designed to protect a broad range of digital and analog circuits. It offers continuous protection from transient voltage surges up to 10V, and transient current of up to 1A, while providing exceptional robustness and reliability over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions.

The SA51CA utilises a temperature-compensated avalanche breakdown technology that options excellent clamping performance at very low operating current. As a result, the device can safely clamp transient voltage up to 10V, while protecting the circuit from possible damage. The device also offers fast response time to transients, with maximum clamp voltage occurring within nanoseconds of a voltage transient.

The SA51CA is designed primarily for applications with two line bus protection, the device offering transient voltage and current suppression on both lines simultaneously. It can also offer high isolation between pad connections, and very low capacitance for signal integrity.

The working principle of the SA51CA is based on reverse polarity breakdown, which occurs when an electric field across an insulator is greater than the breakdown voltage of the material. The breakdown voltage is increased with a DC bias, and when the electric field in an avalanche occurs, the current flows from the cathode to the anode. This results in a voltage drop across the diode and the excess voltage in the circuit is clamped.

In addition, the SA51CA features a vast operating temperature range from -55°C to 175°C, and offers excellent oscillation suppression performance. It is also designed to provide very low thermal noise and excellent ESD protection. This makes it an ideal choice for a variety of applications, including automotive, aerospace, military, industrial, audio/video, telecommunications and data acquisition.
