TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes are highly reliable voltage suppressing devices which provide protection from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and the transients generated by power switching. The SA51AHR0G is a TVS diode designed for Automotive AECD/AEGD power switching applications which require both ESD and voltage surge protection.
The SA51AHR0G is a specific type of TVS diode, known as an avalanche diode. Avalanche diodes behave differently than a standard semiconductor diode in that, under certain conditions, it will allow current to flow in both directions (forward and reverse). This is very useful in Automotive AECD/AEGD applications, since voltage fluctuations and electrical disruptions occur frequently in those environments. The SA51AHR0G is designed to provide protection against both ESD and power switching surges, up to a maximum voltage of 42 volts.
The structure of the SA51AHR0G consists of two PN-junction diodes connected in series. One of the diodes is designed to operate normally, while the other diode is permanently biased at a higher voltage so that it can easily detect any voltage spikes. When a voltage spike occurs, the biased diode breaks down and current starts to flow in both directions, inducing a surge voltage between the two junctions. This surge voltage is then clamped, preventing further damage to the system.
The breakdown voltage of the SA51AHR0G is designed to be 36V, with a maximum voltage of 42V. The ability of the SA51AHR0G to safely absorb ESD and surge pulses is due to its excellent peak power capability, with a maximum peak current of 8A and a maximum peak power of 400W. Furthermore, the SA51AHR0G also has a very low on-state resistance (RDS(on)) of 5mΩ, meaning it will not significantly reduce the voltage of the system it is protecting.
Due to its low RDS(on) and excellent peak power, the SA51AHR0G can safely absorb both ESD and surge pulses without damaging the system. The SA51AHR0G also has a very low stand-by current of only 21µA, meaning it will not draw any unnecessary current if the system is not in use. Furthermore, the SA51AHR0G can also operate over a broad temperature range from -55°C to +125°C, making it suitable for Automotive AECD/AEGD applications.
In summary, the SA51AHR0G is an ideal TVS diode for Automotive AECD/AEGD applications, due to its excellent peak power capabilities and broad operating temperature range. Its low RDS(on) ensures that it will not significantly reduce the system voltage, while its low stand-by current means it will not draw unnecessary current.
