Working Principle
The SA616BS,115 employs a non-linear, mutual-conductance active element to convert the RF signal to an IF signal. This active element is also referred to as a mixer. When the RF signal reaches the mixer, it is converted into an IF signal by a process called heterodyning, whereby the RF signal and the local oscillator (LO) interact and produce a new signal with a difference frequency, equal to the sum of the two input frequencies. This is generally represented as f=|fRF-fLO|. In addition to producing the IF signal, the mixer also provides image rejection and unwanted mixing products which are generally referred to as spurs and harmonics.
When two frequencies are combined, the even and odd order mixing products are produced. The difference frequency between the RF and LO is the wanted or desired signal, and the sum frequency between the RF and LO is the image signal which is generally much weaker than the desired signal. The unwanted or undesirable spurs and harmonics are the multiples of the difference and image frequencies. In order to minimize nonlinear components or unwanted mixing products, most mixers include additional filter circuitry to reject out of band frequencies.
