The SB560 is a single-phase, fastwave rectifier diode. It is composed of a semiconductor p-n junction, which can be forward biased or reverse biased, depending on the voltage and current applied to the device. When the voltage applied to the device is greater than the applied current, the p-n junction is forward biased. This allows electric current to flow across the junction in the same direction as the applied voltage. The current is first concentrated on the most conductive region of the diode which is closer to the p-side. As the current continues to flow, the electrons move from the n-side to the p-side and are re-concentrated on the second most conductive region of the diode which is closer to the n-side. This phenomenon is known as "fastwave rectification" and is the reason the SB560 can make efficient use of power in high-frequency applications. When the voltage applied to the device is less than the applied current, the p-n junction is reverse biased. This prevents electric current from flowing across the junction, thus providing overvoltage protection. The reverse voltage capacity of the SB560 is rated up to 20V.
