The SI3401-EVB Evaluation Board is an ideal component for evaluating DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) designs based on the SI3401 high-efficiency, synchronous buck controller. This evaluation board is a versatile yet low-cost solution for evaluation and characterization of the SI3401 in many applications.
The SI3401-EVB contains all the components necessary for operating the device with a remote sense, over-current protection, and under-voltage lockout protection, as well as for automatically detecting the presence of an AC line input. It can be used to evaluate the SI3401 controller in any application where a high-efficiency, wide-input voltage range, adjustable-output voltage or current, and extensive protections are desired.
The SI3401-EVB is a pre-engineered board designed to integrate the SI3401 controller with optimized performance in a variety of off-line power supply topologies. The board can easily be connected to a mains AC voltage input, to a remote voltage sense, to the output filters, and to any standard DC power measurement equipment. Additionally, it is equipped with support components to enable an evaluation without manual component selection or board layout design.
The SI3401-EVB features an adjustable output voltage of 3.3 - 28V, a maximum output current of 0.5A, and adjustable switching frequency of between 300kHz and 2.2MHz. This makes it ideal for evaluating the SI3401 in a wide variety of applications such as chargers, LED drivers, motor drivers, portable devices, and set-top-box controllers.
The working principle of the measurement board relies on the buck circuit topology with frequency control, voltage regulation, and duty-cycle control. The input power is stepped-down by the switches, switched on and off at a specified frequency. The switching frequency is controlled by the switching frequency pin on the SI3401 controller, while the duty-cycle is adjusted by the frequency control signal from the internal or external oscillator. The output voltage is regulated by the feed-forward comparator, where the internal voltage regulation loop continuously compares the output voltage to the reference voltage and adjusts the duty-cycle to keep the output voltage at the desired level. Finally, the over-current protection circuit detects an over-current situation and shuts down the output device, preventing damage from excessive current.
