Thyristors - SCRs

A silicon-controlled rectifier, or SCR, is a four-layered semiconductor device which switches high current signals or powers link. The SCR’s operation can best be described by calling it a bistable switch. When on, it can be switched off by triggering the current route with a small signal applied to the gate terminal. This switching configuration is the primary reason SCRs are used in AC and DC power circuits.

SJ6006D1RP Application Field and Working Principle

The SJ6006D1RP is an SCR designed to switch high current and voltages. This SCR is designed to work in circuits up to 600 volts. The unit’s peak surge current can reach a daunting 18 amps. In AC power switching applications, the SJ6006D1RP is often applied to control lighting or motor speed control in motor starters.The operation of the SJ6006D1RP follows standard SCR protocols. By applying a small controllable signal to the gate terminal, the SCR switches off completely. When it is off and no gate voltage is present, the unit will not conduct current if the anode and cathode terminals are connected. Switching the SCR back on can be done by either disconnecting and reconnecting the anode and cathode terminals, or by applying a small voltage to the gate.Since the SJ6006D1RP is a low power SCR, it requires a much lower trigger voltage to operate than other SCRs. Its low gatings voltage makes it an ideal choice for applications that require high current to be switched by a low-current device. Although the unit is designed to switch up to 600 volts, its maximum voltage needs to be tested on a case by case basis to ensure it is able to properly function in the circuit.The SJ6006D1RP operates in two stages. In the first stage, the device heats up and its SCR component reaches conduction. This means that when the signal applied to the gate terminal is at or below the turn-on voltage, current will flow from the anode to the cathode. The SJ6006D1RP is an inherently bidirectional device, meaning that it is able to draw current from the cathode terminal, provided the applied signal is at or above the conduction stage.In the second stage, the sustained current that flows through the device creates an anode-cathode drop, which is typically 600V. As soon as the device does not experience the sustained current and the anode-cathode drop is no longer present, the device will turn off and return to the first stage of operation.In summary, the SJ6006D1RP is a thyristor-based SCR designed to switch high current AC and DC signals. It requires a low gating voltage and has a peak surge current capacity of 18 amps.
