Thyristors - SCRs

A Silicon Controlled Rectifier or SCR is a general purpose electronic semiconductor switch that works with applied AC or DC power (also known as a thyristor). The SCR was first developed in 1957 by an American engineer with General Electric as a response to an increase in military demand for efficient and versatile electronic switching devices. The SCR also found widespread use in consumer electronic products in the 1980s, such as electronic thermostats and speedometer controls in cars. Some thyristors are also referred to as AC-ST and DC-ST switches.
