An SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor is a four-layer, three-junction semiconductor device with a gate terminal used for triggering or controlling its conduction. A thyristor is designed as a bidirectional switch, and can be connected in either direction. An SCR is also sometimes called a gate controlled rectifier or controlled rectifier since its operation can be controlled by a small external electric signal at the control gate.

SJ6040NRP helps control the current and adjust the voltage in a circuit, and its working principle can be explained through the basic structure of an SCR. An SCR consists of four layers of alternate P and N-type semiconductor material. Its four junctions form two PNPN electrical structures in its center. A positive gate stimulus applied to gate terminal will cause a conduction path to exist across the two core junctions and allow a current conducted between the anode (A) and the cathode (K). And if the control gate reverse bias, current will not flow through until the gate stimulus is applied, which makes the thyristor act as a bidirectional switch since it can be connected in either direction.

In order to get a better understanding of the working principle of SJ6040NRP, it can also be explained as below: at the beginning, a small gate signal applied to gate terminal is not enough to breakdown the gate junction and start the conduction. But when the gate signal increase to a certain level, the gate junction will breakdown, and the current conducted through PNPN junction will increase quickly at the beginning, and then reach a semi-stable state. As long as the forward voltage exists after the gate signal reversal, the current will keep flowing.
