The SLD8S40A is a bi-directional transient voltage suppression diode in nearly all TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode categories. It is a silicon avalanche diode, designed for Low power, Low voltage protection and a compact form factor. The SLD8S40A is specifically designed to protect sensitive electronics devices from electro-static discharge (ESD) and transients due to switching loads, lightning, RF energy, etc.

Like other TVS/Zener diodes, the SLD8S40A has a free-wheeling diode that limits the voltage drop across the device. It also has a low internal capacitance that absorbs ESD pulses with minimal degradation to the protected circuit. The SLD8S40A has two distinct operating states: a low reverse leakage current state and a high current state.

In the low leakage state, the SLD8S40A is designed to provide protection from high frequency transients as well as ESD-induced voltage spikes. The low internal capacitance prevents the diode from degrading the signal as it passes through the protected circuit. Additionally, the SLD8S40A has an increased reverse bias clamping voltage which helps to protect the device from ESD pulses.
