Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) devices are often known as Transil diodes due to their design and function. They can be used as direct replacement for traditional silicon diodes, but also provide additional protection from transients, bursts and spikes.

SMAJ12 is a series of transient voltage suppression devices (TVS) diodes from Littelfuse. It is a compact, high-speed glass surge protection diode array, commonly configured as a single 12-line version of an SMAJ bidirectional diode array.

Application Field

The SMAJ12 series is used in applications such as computers, consumer devices, telecom and industrial systems, and can be used to protect against electrostatic discharges, electric fast transients, faulty power lines and transients caused by inductive loads. Furthermore, the TVS diode also provides protection from secondary-side transients, including telecommunication and LAN line protection.

Working Principle

SMAJ12 works on the principle of avalanche breakdown. When the voltage across the device reaches its breakdown voltage, the device switches to a low resistance state in a few nanoseconds. This low resistance path then diverts the surge current safely to ground.

SMAJ12 has a low capacitance and low clamping voltage, making it an ideal surge protection device. It also features a low reverse leakage current as well as an ESD diode between the common pin and each diode stage. This provides additional protection from EMI (electromagnetic interference).
