Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are devices that are designed to protect circuits from voltage spikes that can occur for many reasons, including the switching of inductive loads, power surges from the grid, lightning strikes, and electrostatic discharge (ESD). They are also known as surge suppressors, clampers, or voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs).

SMAJ400 is a unidirectional TVS diode used to protect electronic equipment from overvoltage transients and ESD. It is typically used in consumer electronics such as computers, phones, and tablets. Some applications for this device include protection for high-speed data lines, devices connected to the Internet of Things, medical equipment, and military hardware.

This device can be used in a variety of circuit configurations, including series connection, shunt connection, and Zener clamping configurations. It has a standoff voltage rating of 400V (for unidirectional devices) or 600V (for bidirectional devices). This rating is the maximum voltage that the device can tolerate before it begins to conduct. The working principle of the SMAJ400 is based on avalanche break down and protection from transients. As the voltage increases across the device, it eventually reaches its avalanche voltage breakdown point (VBR). At this point, the electrons in the device start to break down, forming an avalanche effect that further increases the current through the device rapidly. This increased current rapidly dissipates the excess energy of the pulse, thus protecting the circuit from voltage spikes.

When the voltage across the device drops below its avalanche voltage breakdown point (VBR), the current flow stops and the device returns to its high impedance state. This prevents permanent damage to the protected circuit, and also allows the device to be reused when the transient has been dissipated.

Since the SMAJ400 has a low clamping voltage and fast response time, it is an ideal solution for high speed data lines that need to be protected from voltage surges or over-voltage transients. It also has a low capacitance level, which helps reduce unwanted noise on signal lines. The SMAJ400 provides reliable protection from transient events and electrostatic discharge while protecting the connected circuit from any potential damage.
