TVS, Transient Voltage Suppressors, are a type of diode designed to protect electronic circuits from high-voltage transients, which occur frequently in locations subjected to lightning. The SMAJ400A transient voltage suppressor diode, also known as a Transorb, is used to safeguard sensitive equipment from transients up to 400 Volts. Developed by Multicomp, the SMAJ400A is a single component designed to protect positive, negative and bi-directional circuits.
SMAJ400A is available in discrete DO-15 (SMA) device packages. It is a very useful device as it stands up to the extreme surge levels associated with lightning strikes, power line surges and electrostatic discharges. The SMJ400A is built from a glass-filled epoxy encapsulated die, with a standoff voltage of 400V. This device is silent, does not require any external EMI/RFI filtering, and has a power dissipation rating of 1 Watt. The unit features low capacitance, fast response times, and high clamping voltage.
The SMAJ400A works similarly to a zinc oxide varistor. It is composed of a semiconductor junction, with the gap being an air-filled dielectric. When a high voltage transient occurs, the air gap acts as a dielectric, creating a barrier to the higher voltage and allowing the SMAJ400A to absorb and divert the current. This protects the vulnerable components in the circuit, such as the processor, memory and bus lines, from damage due to excessive voltage.
The 400 Volt rating of the SMAJ400A corresponds to a minimum standoff rating of 400 volts. At this level, the diode will begin conducting current, allowing it to absorb high voltage transients and protect downstream components from damage. The unit has a peak pulse power rating of 2.4kW giving it a reasonably high voltage stress rating, due to the fact that it can withstand very large voltage overloads.
The SMAJ400A is well suited for a variety of applications. It is typically used to protect electrical components from voltage spikes and transients that occur in power supplies, automotive systems, electronic circuits and consumer appliances. It can also be used to provide surge protection in conjunction with a MOV.
