TVS - Diodes are components used to withstand or protect costly equipment from transient voltage or high voltages that may be produced from electrical surges. This form of protection is necessary in order to provide isolation from electrical disturbances that can cause irreparable damages to expensive systems. The main application of SMAJ51A is to provide reliable voltage spike protection for applications such as personal computers, telecommunications and other sensitive electronic equipment.

SMAJ51A is a low-power transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode. It is based on a unidirectional architecture that, when used in parallel with a device load, helps protect the load from overvoltage transients. It also helps reduce EMI/RFI interference originating from shared power-supplies, free-running currents, and electro-magnetic discharges. In addition, this device helps to suppress voltage-induced noise, which can interfere with communication security and accuracy.

The SMAJ51A is a dual-breakdown diode with two reverse-biased breakdown paths. The first breakdown path is designed to provide a high-speed clamping action for transients in the range of 5V to 51V, while the second breakdown path offers a low-speed clamping action for transients in the range of 48V to 200V. This device offers superior compatibility with a wide range of voltage systems operating between 0 to 200V, allowing it to be used in a variety of applications and environments.

The working principle is the same as a conventional diode. When the voltage across the diode exceeds its breakdown voltage, a portion of the current will be diverted, allowing a large energy surge to pass through. The major difference between a regular diode and the SMAJ51A is that the SMAJ51A has two distinct breakdown regions. This allows the diode to respond more quickly to high-voltage transient surge events and reduce system damage. Another benefit of the two-cell architecture is that it eliminates the need for overvoltage protection circuits and reduces the component count.

The most important feature of the SMAJ51A is its over-temperature protection capability. During surge conditions, the device can exceed its power rating providing the junction temperature does not exceed + 175°C. It also features an integrated thermal fuse that activates when the device reaches 175°C. This ensures that the device can withstand prolonged periods of high surge current up to its P o rating within an acceptable ambient temperature range.

The SMAJ51A offers a number of advantages, including high reliability, ease of use, and integration. It is easy to use, as all components are integrated on a single substrate, which simplifies installation and improves system performance. Additionally, the device is highly reliable due to its ESD and over-temperature protection, and it is also RoHS compliant.
