The SMAJ75CA is a unidirectional transient voltage suppressor, classified in the TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diode family. It is developed and manufactured by Rectron Semiconductor, a semiconductor foundry specializing in high-voltage products.

Due to its high surge capability (up to 1.5kA at 10/1000 μs) this device has been mostly designed for EFT (electrical fast transient) and ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection in large circuit boards. The SMAJ75CA is a multilayer TVS diode. It has a double zener breakdown technology, meaning that there is a normal breakdown voltage (semiconductor avalanche effect) and a zener breakdown voltage (electron-hole pairs generation), to provide maximum protection. It features a clamping voltage below 15V, with peak pulse power dissipation of up to 400W (10/1000 μs pulse) and operating temperature ranging from -55°C to +150°C.

The device works by clamping the voltage, limiting the current and damping the voltage overshoot. When a transient pulse is applied to the diode, its normal breakdown voltage is exceeded and the current begins to flow through the device. The high current of the transient causes the zener breakdown voltage of the diode to be exceeded, causing the voltage to be clamped. This will help to suppress the transient surge before it reaches the protected device.
