The SMC5K20A-M3/I is a rectifier diode, which belongs to the TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diode family. It is a bi-directional, sharp-recovery TVS diode whose maximum reverse breakdown voltage is 5,000 Volts, and maximum continuous operating voltage is 1,200 Volts. It is designed for the protection of voltage-sensitive devices and circuitry from destructive transient voltage surges.
The SMC5K20A-M3/I is equipped with an array of features that make it perfectly suitable for the stringent requirements of the automotive, industrial and telecom industries. The working principle of the SMC5K20A-M3/I lies in its ability to rapidly reduce transient voltages, in response to a sharp increase in current flow. When a surge voltage is applied to the diode across the anode and cathode, the electrons in the circuit are pushed away by the increasing electric field, leading to a decrease in current. This decrease in current is then followed by an increase in voltage at the diode junction. This sudden increase in voltage creates a barrier, which prevents further electrons from entering the diode. The result is that the surge current is “clamped” at the diode junction, isolating the sensitive device or circuit.
Some of the typical applications for the SMC5K20A-M3/I include AC/DC motor drives, inverters, telecom networks, industrial control systems, uninterruptable power supplies and automotive systems. In such applications, it provides protection against spikes, surges, EFTs and lightning strikes without causing additional EMI.
