SP6121EB Application Field and Working PrincipleThe SP6121EB evaluation board is a type of DC/DC or AC/DC (off-line) switch mode power supply (SMPS). It represents a relatively new-breed of energy efficient, cost-effective power equipments. The product is versatile and suitable for various off-line power supplies, especially those that employ passive components such as inductors and fixed capacitors.The SP6121EB evaluation board is suitable for high performance applications such as off-line, wide range AC/DC, and high-current power supplies. The board is equipped with flexible features such as variable coil application, over power / current protection, high current soft-start switch, and easy-operation short-circuit protection.The SP6121EB evaluation board uses a synchronous Buck/Flyback converter as the main energy-conversion unit, whereas the energy-conversion process is largely dependent on a DC/DC switch-mode topology. The board utilizes both the primary (mains) and secondary (output) side of the power supply in order to provide a clean, regulated output.The synchronous Buck/Flyback converter is based on a concept wherein the energy is transferred from the primary to the secondary side of the power supply via a magnetic field. The degree of energy transfer is dependent on certain parameters such as voltage, current, duty cycle of the switch, and frequency of operation.The board is equipped with several external components which play a crucial role in the synchronous Buck/Flyback converter’s energy-conversion process. Some of these components include power MOSFET switches, primary and secondary side output capacitors, inductors, and variable-purpose resistors. The external components are arranged around the synchronous Buck/Flyback converter, and work in tandem with it in order to ensure an efficient energy transfer process.When the board is powered up, the circuit begins the energy-conversion process. Initially, the energy supply draws power from the primary side of the power supply, wherein the power is conducted through the power MOSFET switches. Simultaneously, the primary side capacitors collect and store energy, while the inductors store magnetic energy.When the energy supply reaches the secondary side of the power supply, the secondary side capacitors begin to store energy and transfer it to the output. The output capacitors also help filter and reduce the voltage ripple. In this stage, the output voltage of the secondary side is regulated with the help of secondary-side output voltage resistors.The switching speeds of the power MOSFET switches and the inductor are important in terms of providing a clean, regulated output. The energy storage and transfer process is cyclical, with the switches and the inductor alternating their roles in order to ensure a smooth and constantly regulated output.The SP6121EB evaluation board is equipped with a variety of protection systems that regulate the energy-conversion process. These include over-current and over-temperature protection, as well as short-circuit protection. Other features of the board include its adjustable soft-start switch, which helps minimize the inrush current.The SP6121EB evaluation board is a versatile, cost-efficient, and energy-efficient off-line power supply.
