The STEVAL-ILL053V1 is an LED driver evaluation board by STMicroelectronics. It is designed to evaluate the performance of STMicroelectronics’ LED drivers. The board is based on a proprietary four-string LED control and dimming architecture, which can provide efficient and cost-effective AC/DC LED lighting solutions.The STEVAL-ILL053V1 provides four channels of AC/DC LED driver control, each channel with four strings of LEDs, at a maximum 5A per channel. The board supports a wide range of LED strings with up to four independently controlled LED strings. By utilizing the current sensing feedback and LED dimming functions of STMicroelectronics’ LED drivers, high-efficacy and long-lasting LED lighting solutions can be achieved.At the heart of the STEVAL-ILL053V1 is STMicroelectronics’ STLED64M, an LED driver based on an adjustable step-down control and regulator topology. The STLED64M provides 8-bit dimming with a duty cycle range of 0-100%, and can drive up to 5A of current into the LEDs. Furthermore, the STLED64M provides both analog and digital dimming control, and can directly interface with microcontrollers and other host controllers.The STEVAL-ILL053V1 also features two external MOSFETS, connected between the STLED64M and the LED strings, which can be used to reduce power losses. The user can then select the external MOSFETs to match the application requirements and to exactly fit the LED strings, resulting in a high efficiency LED lighting solution.In addition to the external MOSFETs, the STEVAL-ILL053V1 also features a voltage supervisor and programmable timer, enabling LED dimming control to be responsive to the system’s energy needs. With the programmable timer, the user can accurately control the range of the LED driver’s duty cycle so that the system supplies the desired brightness and power level.The STEVAL-ILL053V1 also features built-in thermal protection, circuit protection and current sensing feedback, which help to ensure maximum safety and life-span of the system. The integrated current sensing feedback also helps to eliminate the need for current limiting resistors, further reducing the overall system cost.In addition to the STLED64M, the STEVAL-ILL053V1 also supports a variety of STMicroelectronics’ LED drivers, including the STLED66M, the STLED68M and the STLED80M.
