The STEVAL-ILL065V1 is a fully integrated LED driver IC solution that is well suited for various applications such as TV backlighting, remote backlighting, general illumination and automotive lighting. Developed by STMicroelectronics, STEVAL-ILL065V1 is a general purpose, high efficiency, low cost, AC/DC LED driver controller used in combination with external MOSFETs and inductor. The device offers a wide range of features to reduce system cost, development time and complexity. It supports the Buck step-down converter topology and can drive up to 4 differential Cathode-Anode stages independently.

The STEVAL-ILL065V1 is designed for usage as a single-stage or multi-stage buck converter solution with an integrated MOSFET operating from AC main, depending on the application. The supported output currents are above 700mA for each channel, for maximized flexibility and efficiency. The controller also supports different dimming strategies with its combination of the Analog dimmer interface and the Digital Envelope Tracking technique for LED current. It is capable of acting as a LED-to-AC adapter with burst mode operations to maintain a smooth dimming behavior at low brightness, without sacrificing efficiency.

The STEVAL-ILL065V1 can also accommodate several protection features such as Under-Voltage lockout (UVLO), Over-Current Detection (OCD), Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and Thermal Shutdown (TSD). It also has an integrated compensation circuit that provides higher system accuracy and reduces the external components, resulting in improved system cost efficiency. The driver can also be used for PFC/PFC+Dimming and has a dedicated input for dimming signal.

The working principle of the STEVAL-ILL065V1 is based on a Buck switching regulator. This generates a DC voltage, the level of which is controlled by Output Current Control (OCC). In order to regulate the output current of the driver, the device uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, which generates digital square wave signals of varying duty cycle. This signal then controls the switching of the MOSFET, which supplies power to the LED. The voltage at the LED is regulated through OCC. The LED driver controls the LED current by modulating a signal and producing a current at its output.
