The STEVAL-ISA134V1 evaluation board is a universal solution to study power supply topologies for off-line switching mode power supplies (SMPSs) across both the DC/DC and AC/DC domains. It is configured with easy-to-use development environments to allow quick prototyping and testing of many types of power converter designs. The board is based on the feature-rich STM32F334C8T6 microcontroller with its integrated advanced motor control peripherals.
The STEVAL-ISA134V1 is designed to evaluate a wide variety of power recipes with up to 700W output power capability. It can evaluate AC/DC boost/flyback, flyback, forward converter, and DC/DC buck, boost, and buck-boost topologies. It supports both PWM rectifiers and active clamp rectifiers for single-stage AC/DC conversion. The board also provides various fault and protection features such as cycle by cycle current limit, over temperature protection, and short circuit protection.
STEVAL-ISA134V1 Working Principle
The STEVAL-ISA134V1 board is based on a single stage power conversion topology. It uses a microcontroller based boosting power stage to bridge between an AC power supply or DC source and the load. The booster section includes an active power factor correction (PFC) part which allows a single-stage conversion from an AC input source to a DC output. The PFC is designed with transistor-based switches that are driven by the edge-triggered PFC signals generated by the microcontroller to generate the AC-input voltages equal to the DC output level.
The microcontroller then drives the booster section which converts the DC level to the demanded output voltage. A power MOSFET is used as the switch in order to avoid the losses associated with using BJT technology and this is selected to get a trade-off between the switching speed and the conduction loss. The power stage is controlled by a synchronous buck-boost controller implemented with PWM technology. This buck-boost application allows constant peak current mode control.
The board also comes with an embedded safety system to monitor the power output and monitor temperature, current and voltage parameters. In addition, there is an embedded power supply current measurement and power monitoring technique (EPWIM) which allows the precise monitoring of power output over the whole operating range. This system also allows the user to monitor all the power parameters such as voltage, current, power, and frequency.
